What will high schools look like for the next generation? (Section 06)

In class today we discussed if the current education system is in need of some sort of reform. Your intitial answer was, of course, based on your personal experience. Whether or not you believe some sort of reform is needed or not a new question that arises is that of what will high school be like for the next generation? Will high school and the education system remain the same or will they both be vastly different from what we experienced?

In writing your response please refer to any of the selected readings (the education essays), Ken Robinson's "Do Schools Kill Creativity?" speech/video personal experience. Be sure that you fully explain your position. You may refer to the essay that we are currently writing in class, as well.

All responses are due by 7:30 AM on 2/17/11.

  1. High schools will remain the same for the next generation. The same courses students take now are the same courses that hopefully will be offered to the next generation. There will be those who struggle and those who succeed and I guarantee the ones that succeed will very much look like the students who excel today and take the education very seriously. If the generation in the future struggles with the standards now, then the high school education system will have to decrease the intensity and work load in order to satisfy the needs of the students. I, however, do not believe it will come to a point like that. The education system will remain the same, but it is all up to the student, if there was to be any sort of change.

  2. I believe that high schools will not reamian the same throughout the next generation becuase of the opinions that we now have. Many adults always say how we are the future and this could lead to the way schools are run. I also think that in the next generation there will be a more variety of choices of classes for schools like ours due to the fact of how the students feel about having a variety of classes. Althoughn these changes wont be drastic, they could be enough to make the students in the next generation enjoy school just a little bit more.

  3. I believe that high school wouldn't remain the same for the next generations. As the years go by without even knowing schools do change, people do get smarter and the curriculum changes. Today , we have freshman's coming into our school on the average juniors level. Next thing you know we'll have freshmans coming in taking college classes in high school so they wouldn't have to pay for them in college. As the years go by the Curriculum gets harder and tougher each year. The credits you need to graduate are increased and sooner or later a high school diploma would just be a piece of paper instead of your golden ticket for getting a job.

  4. I think that high schools are gonna change a lot. If you havent noticced the standards have gone up in the last 10 years forcing students to do better. Back then passing was a 55 not 65. As this happens more students willl fail but also many more will strive to do better. I think in the future their would be more choices as well, much more variety

  5. I honestly believe that high schools and the education system are eventually going to change. The reason for believing this is due to the fact that our standards have changed since the past. The education system has higher expectations for the new generation in hopes that students will work harder to achieve their goals. The change won't be tremendous, but it will be enough. As seen in the speech made by Ken Robinson, young adults should be given the opportunity to take their talents and make use of it in school. Through petitions, appeals, and requests by the students, eventually schools are going to realize the interests of students. If the education system could provide students with extracurricular courses that students want to take, then students will definitely be motivated to come to school. Even if they raise the standards, students will work harder in order to get the privilege of taking a class or course they are interested in. So it's a win win situation for both students and the school system.

  6. Changes occur all the time, whether it's small or big or for the better or the worse. Some of those changes could improve many things where as some might just stay the same. Over the years, our school systems have transformed from schools teaching you how to just read and write to schools that give you more subjects that fits you better. I think the school systems can change for the better in the sense that, it allows students to pick a certain amount of classes that allow them to explore their creativity and what they wanna do. If the school systems remain the same, creativity won't be able to show causing students to not to be able to do their best because they couldn't express what they like to by the best way they can. This proves the point Ken Robinson was trying to get at when he was saying do schools kill creativity and to some extent that is true because if students can't take what they like or think they wanna do then what makes anyone think they will do good in school. Also, in the essay " I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read" by Francne Prose proves a valid point that if we aren't allowed to read book we want to read, and have to read the ones the school systems wants us to read, eventually people will give up in reading books since they are forced to read something they might not like. School systems need to change for better in order to make things work for the next generation.

  7. My own personal beliefs are that high schools will stay the same over the next generation. We are focusing on education to be our future if you watch tv there are commercials for this type of thing. The city wants math and science to be our future becasue its what they believe is most important. Right now we have a focus on math and science in most of our schools and i believe this will not change. The school system does not trust us to make our own decisions so thet give us classes they believe will help us succed. I believe this will happen until unemployment rises and they notice kids arent focused on things they dont like. And with not a good education ita hard to find a good job. The school system needs to be changed.

  8. I believe things will change but only to catch up with the advancing young minds. My friends little brother is already trying to find x in 3rd grade. Children are getting more work, which means their minds are developing quickly at a young age. So the only thing that will change is a harder curriculum, but nothing such as giving kids the option to choose what will inspire them. The reason why kids don't try is because they need inspiration, such as the essay "A Model for High School" stated. Yet as the years pass, I think the education system will only advance to keep up with the ages such as better technology in class or a harder curriculum, but not in the way where we want it to change which is giving small schools more options for kids.

  9. I think the next generation of highschools are going to be different from today. There is going to be more technology, and the technology is going to teach the kids in the future. There is going to be higher standards for kids next generation then now and the schools are going to be more advanced. The learning curriculum is going to be harder, and their is going to be more choices for the students then now. Next generation the kids are going to be smarter and I think the students now will change the highschools form of teaching. The next generation of highschools are going to change and make things better for the students.

  10. The current education system is in need of some sort of reform. They need to be able to give students opportunities and variety to prepare them for the real world. Only from having a variety, you can learn the different aspects and include them into your everyday life. Schools today are beginning to become more strict and more difficult. Not only high schools are becoming difficult. Junior high schools, middle schools and elementary schools are becoming difficult as well. The next generation of students are being taught to learn at a younger age so their minds can develop rapidly. Things that other students in my age range learned in %th grade is now being taught to students in 3rd grade. The education system will not remain the same because it is already changing little by little even if we don't notice it. As the years go by, new things are being invented or created and it will help in the education field to develop minds. I believe that even though they think that enhancing the education system will allow students to become more educated and learn quickly, they aren't thinking of the fact that they are destroying creativity. Part of the reform of the education system should definitely be a variety of additional classes or programs. This will improve ones education because it will allow them to narrow down their choices. It will also prepare them for college because many students waste so much money on switching majors because high school didn't prepare them enough in order for them to decide what they want to do in life. Hopefully as the education system becomes stronger and better for the next generation, it will prepare them as much as they can so students can be confident that they are able to handle the real world.

  11. I believe that high school will not remain the same for the next generation. Our school system today has changed a lot over time and there are many more changes that will be brought upon us. The standards for students rise for every generation. For example, today in class you mentioned how when you took the SAT it was about 1400 and today its 2400. Our society today is all based on technology and everyday there inventing more products to make life easier for us. With all this new technology our school system will be more advanced and also play a big role in raising the standards for students.

  12. I believe that there will be a change in high schools during the next generation because of the technology that will be available. As you can see today there is more and more technology being produced for the schools, in the next generation that's all its going to be is technology. It will be different for the students as well because the teachers will be pushing harder and harder for the students to succeed. Technology has made schools different now, imagine what it will be like in the next generation.

  13. I think that there will be change in high schools though it will be minor changes nothing to drastic will occur. It wont because many people are complacent with the current education system and those that try to change it are either few in numbers or don't have the authority to.

  14. I personaly feel that the next generation will have relatively same highschool experience as we are now. i feel this way because change usually doesnt happen over a very short time period, especially in society today. today it seems like the world is starting to plateau in new methods, however we are making improved ways to do things that we already know how to do. this also applys to the school system. during my 3 years of highschool i saw barely any change at all and the change i did see was in faculty of my school itself, not so much the curriculum. also students are always going to have to be taught the 4 basic subjects which are english, math, science and history. these classes will take up the majority of their schedule which is how it is today aswell. this is why i feel the next generation of kids in highschool will experience similar things that we are now.

  15. I believe that high schools from the next generation will change. Today, many students are arguing about classes that are not needed. Many of us have agreed that students should have the option to choose their own cases. That way, we will be learning what we want to learn. Learning what we want to learn will cause students to pay attention, do well in class and have some fun. This is how I believe schools are going to look like in the next generation.
