The Impact of Gender Roles (Section 09)

Hey guys,

In this post is the discussion questions. Please answer it before 7:00 PM on Sunday (March 20th, 2011).

How do gender roles and presumed gender behavior affect the school environment that we learn in? Please explain your position on this topic and support it with one specific example. It can be a personal example but please do not mention names of teachers or students. Keep it as mature and appropriate as possible or your comment will be deleted.

  1. Gender roles and behavior in school are more or less based on expectations set by family members or peers. It can affect the way people perceive students. For example, guys can be complimented for boldly participating in class, being confident and aggressive in their words, whereas women may be commended for being quiet, yet polite and and focused on their studies. I think that it is more common to find a guy acting out in class rather than a girl, whom while being obscure in the classroom, can actually be quite intelligent when needed. In other words, in school male and female students are attached with respective stereotypes that we subconsciously accept and follow, but there will always be those that vary from these expected characteristics, as all people are different, from one male to another, and one female to another.

  2. Gender roles just as tareen said above are "based on expectations set by family members or peers." I agree with him because in school you rarely see a female acting inappropriately unlike the male students. The female students some of them are actually more sensitive than a few male students. The male students are basically the "Tough guys" that think their above everything else which leads to inappropriate behavior and being disruptive. It all depends on how the student was raised at home and the people around them that influence them to "fit in with the crowd"

  3. Over time, especially in the modernized world, gender roles have pretty much deteriorated. There isn't any significance for tradition or culture anymore especially in the common households today. We more than less see now that the women, wife or mother of the household goes out t work while the man, husband or dad stays home to babysit the kids. We even did not even come far from the election of a woman as the president of the United States. The traditions or cultures of women and their roles of only domestic care like cooking, cleaning and taking care of others. In schools, students don't really judge by gender only if sports or games are involved; we were always brought to learn how to work with others and everyone else.

  4. In the school enviroment there is still sterotypes of gender. Everywhere we go there is going to be judgement between men and women. In school we have sports and the guys will choose the guys. I think that happens in every school. Female's are suppose to be polite and the males are louder. There is gender sterotyping everywhere or even the little things. Another account would be when the adults in school need help lifting things right away they say can i get 5 guys to help me. The gender affects school by charatercizing them between female and male. Females are suppose to act in a calm way.

  5. Gender roles and presumed gender behavior affect the school environment that we learn in because of our judgement. Its the same when guys hang out with other guys or girls hang out with girls and friends hang out with friends. The only thing is that we are all different and have different needs. Yes times have changed and the way we see this topic have changed as well. We have different styles. Males are stronger than femalse but that doesnt have to do anything with how smart you are. Like what we discuss in class, about the Mtv show, those women wanted to do that, it was their choice. No one forced them it was their judgement. So gender behavior is really a choice of action and judgement and that affects the way we learn.

  6. Gender roles and behavior affects the school environment that we learn in by the way we are act at home. Behavior is affected by how our parents raise us, and what we do at school is due to the freedom we recieve at home. For example, at home I am expected to follow rules of my religion and practice it as well. this means, I do not behave in an improper way. I also do not curse or disrupt another being. Gender role and behavior is only due to how one is raise. so in school, gender role is set on how one acts every where is. any one can act out in class it has nothing to do if they are a boy or girl. A person can do what ever he or she wants because they get the freedom at school. In a school environment, your parents are not in control of you, you are incontrol of your self so u can do what you want. Sports, hands on activities and education is for anyone. Gender role and behavior do not affect the school environment we learn in because every one is equal to do what they want and only you can follw rule that you want to follow. These days, religion, culture, and tradition does not affect us because those were the things of the past. Men do what they want and women do the same.

  7. I agree with Abid, that "the school environment that we learn in by the way we are act at home." Our behavior at home represents and reflects our behavior at school. For example, how we sit lazily at school reflects our behavior after/before school hours. How we react to our parents and obey there commands we obey our teachers. Gender plays its role in this by look towards our pasts and peers. Amongst them we behave a different way and act sometimes irregular. Like Tareen said before that a boy would be portrayed as "being confident and aggressive in their words, whereas women may be commended for being quiet, yet polite and and focused on their studies"; but everyone is not the same and there are bound to be people who are different an stick out from the rest. Gender plays its role accompanying many other fluctuating elements.

  8. It is mainly stereotypes created by presumed gender behavior that affects the school environment we learn in. There are stereotypes made about males and females, and we see this more often than not. Some of these have already been stated above, such as choosing guys over girls for a sports team, or for certain tasks that require strength, like lifting big/heavy objects. In terms of schoolwork and doing projects together however, it's a somewhat different story. I am not sure if this is still the norm in high school, but when I was in elementary school and junior high school, all the guys wanted to sit and/or be in a group with other guys, and the same for the girls. We had reasons for avoiding the opposite gender, such that I quite do not remember, but this alone proves that we had in mind our own opinions about people of the opposite gender.

  9. Gender roles in the school play an affect in the learning enviroment. Males and females have two different charaterstics in school. Males are known for being inmature and loud. Were as females are quiet and their to learn. Even thought males and females are their both to learn, their genders affect their learning. When a girl needs help a guy will drop everything to help them were as a guy the girls will say your dumb and wont help. Girls also suck up about 95 percent of the time to get good grades were as guys do thier best and gain the grade they deserve. Males also are easily distracted were as the girls are able to be focused. Thats how the males and females are affected by thier genders in learning.

  10. Gender roles do play a part in society, including our school environment. As much as you might not want to see it, it is in our school environment, the least place you would expect to see it. Gender behavior affected the school environment because of how male and females are associated. Females are associated to being the “angel” and the boys the “trouble makers”. Meanings, female are the ones who are quiet, study hard, and do their work. Whereas, the role of the male is to be the class clowns, the joke of the class, the interpretation of the classroom. I feel this is not true because it doesn’t matter what gender you are, you are classified depending on how you act. In school however, it is scientifically shown that males are the ones who get into the most trouble compared to girls because there averages are higher. Also, they assume that boys are better in sport than girls. They feel that girls are only book smart. Again, I feel this is not true, I think it each and every person is different not only classified by their gender type. Furthermore our school environment is expressed in a way to make this entire look like a secret. I say this because it says that we are all treated equally no matter what. But this whole idea is double standard because in society, you are based on your gender. I think the society from a long time ago made it this way. On a personal note an example to show how gender plays a role is relationship wise. If a guy goes out with different girls in the school for a short period of time, he is noble, or popular compared to the others. But if a girl goes out with more than one guy in a short term even a long term she is associated as being tramp, and so many uncalled names. I feel this is not right because it clearly shows the diversity in the genders. It is said that we are all equally the same, when it comes to rights, when it comes to justice and when it comes to the laws, but when it comes to gender we are not equally the same.

  11. Gender roles and presumed gender behavior are based on the environment surrounding the school. In todays time and age the expectations for both male and female students are the same but they way the students are looked at has not fully changed. The same is expected from a female student than a male student. Today both genders are getting prestiges internship for careers they are planning on getting into later on. Not everything has change though. Male students are still looked as a the loud rebellious ones while the female students are quite and keep to themselves. As Nick said above male students get distracted easily by just the littlest thing and I can say that because I can relate to that. Females are supposed to stay focused on their work and get good grades.

  12. Gender roles play a big part in todays society, specially in our learning environment. One example that i think fits this theory is, in gym male and female students are separated most of the time. I dont think that its fare for some of the females that actually do want to play and have the ability to play with the male students. A solution to this might be to have the females that want to play with the males, they should be able to and the rest of the female students can just play with each other.

  13. Gender definitely plays a big role in our school environment. From the time we were in elementary school girls and boys were treated differently. In the classroom boys are viewed as the roudy abnoxious type while girls are labeled as the quite innocent ones. These sterotypes are understandable because in most cases they are true but they should not mean one gender is favored over the other. Another example of gender roles in school is gym. Gym teachers sometimes have a calmer more relaxed demeanor towards girls because it is assumed that girls cannot succeed in athletics as well as boys. Girls may be given certain privleges that boys do not get. Boys are expected to follow gym rules or else they will be called out on their behavior more so than girls. That's just the way it is and I see no change in sight.

  14. Gender roles affect the school environment because it shows that everyone is not equal. This affects how students learn and how they react towards each other. In school, the environment we are in when it comes to gym is never equal and never will be equal, at times if the gym is too full with many classes girls play with girls and boys play with boys. (That’s how it was freshman year)I find it unfair because of the simple fact that some girls are stronger than boys and we are just as good in sports as some of them are. We should have the choice with whoever we want to play with. Now we play with the guys but still either way we do play sports such as one that you have to throw the ball and tag someone in your opposite team, I’m not saying no one throw’s me the ball, but they do it rarely. You get what I’m saying? Anyway it’s unfair because guys think girls are weak and they aren’t manly enough to play strong but little do they know that some of us are just as good. Well that’s what I think. It affects me in the school environment because I’ll get pissed off and I build up anger inside of me. I believe gym is a great example of how gender roles come into place and how there is no equality what’s so ever. Either way its always going to be like this and I think it would be like this forever, because woman are known to be gentle soft and passionate and back in the day you didn’t see woman playing football, or any sports. It was always men who were strong and the ones who played so that was passed down till this day. I see where the guys are coming from because usually girls complain when a ball hits them or goes near them but they need to realize that not every girl is like that we are all different. Also some male students are mad to lose but they need to realize to stop going so hard because it’s not like we are in tournament it’s just for fun.

  15. The role of gender in our school isn't too apparent. Its shown subtly amongst the small reactions both teachers and students have towards certain genders. The small differences between the faculty's response to actions by different gender students seems to make some students react in odd ways. When a female student acts up in class a male teacher usually acts less threatening towards the student. It is the opposite with a male student when he acts up. The behavior towards a female student doesn't seem to change with a female teacher, the student is still handled with in a less aggressive way than the boys. Its a common thing to see, a female student seems to be accepted as talkative and social so it is handled as if it has to happen. But a male student seems to have another image within a teacher's mind, an image that seems to invoke an aggressive response when a male student speaks out of line. A female student will get a smile and a "please stop" while a male student will get a scowl and a "Do you want detention?" It only affects the general feeling inside of a student's mind and it can cause some students to be lazy and others to be more strict upon themselves. A female student could become lazy and therefore fail because a teacher gives her a break, while a male student could do the opposite due to his punishment.

  16. Gender roles are not present in todays school systems. Maybe 20 years ago they were but not today. Bot guys and girls are the trouble makers and the good students. The stereotypes of a good girl and a bad boy are gone. Girls are just as bad these days not to mention that there are morally good boys as well. The whole gym teacher having a lower focus on girls is the girls fault entirely because alot of girls aren't interested in sports. Granted the fact that some are and those who are, are given attention. There are no more gender differences except if there is a teacher asking for someone to lift something because guys are typically stronger.

  17. Gender roles and behavior has a strong affect on the schools environment. Each gender has certain characteristics that differentiate them in the educational community. The males are always viewed as the loud and obnoxious learners, while the females are seen as calm and gentle learners. an example that also supports the affect of gender roles is that if a female were to ask for help, without hesitation they would be assisted because subconsciously we believe they need more help. However, if a male were to ask for extra help the majority of the time, they would be denied because we subconsciously believe males should be able to work and understand by themselves without assistance.

  18. In school girls seem to be more creative and expressive. The guys are shown to have more mathematical and scientific knowledge. The fact that our school has more guys than girls is an example of how guys tend to have more mathematical knowledge than girls.Engineering is a very math and science heavy major. It seems odd that our school is an example of a stereotype amongst the genders. That of which guys being more math heavy and girls being more creative.

  19. Gender roles aren't valid anymore in school. Boys and girls get the equal amount and quality of education. Rather in older times, girls would get a limited education and wouldn't be allowed to play certain sports. Today girls can learn anything they want, and play any sport in school. However, when it comes to sports girls are stereotypically viewed in a way that they can't play sports good. For example, In gym, no one ever throws the girls the ball! Socially, students tend to judge other students. By this i mean, If one girl hangs around a bunch of boys then that makes her 'improper'. If a boy hangs around a lot of girls it makes him a pimp. Education wise, all students get equal attention. In Classrooms, girls do have more respect. You hear teachers saying "with all due respect" or " have some respect for the ladies". Other than that, in school genders don't really play a role anymore.

  20. In schools there expectations that people have for each gender. Some of the expectations are that the boys are generally stronger than girls so most teachers have the boys help them with different things while on the other teachers assume that the girls are neater and better at organizers papers for them. Though this is what most people believe not all people follow that.

  21. Stereotypes have always existed and will always exist. In the school environment the idea of male supremacy still exist. Boys are expected to be raising their hands more often than girls and be more out spoken. By believing this people are indirectly supporting male supremacy in the school environment. Expecting boys to participate more is the same as assigning gender roles. The roots of gender roles in the educational environment can be traced back to a childs home. A child who grew up in a family where his father makes all the decisions will go to school thinking hes better than the females. A child who grows up with both parents making decisions together will go to school have mutual respect for both genders

  22. In my opinion, in school girls and boys are treated unequally depending on the situation. In some cases boys who have more freedom and participate in more activities in school have lower grades than those of girls who have the same privilege. In societies eyes girls are pushed to succeed more in school than boys. There is always an unfair treatment in school as there is outside of school when it comes to girls being looked at as a whore and a slut, when boys who most likely brag about moving around with girls are treated as legends and praised. Situations where a boy gets a girl pregnant, the girl is mostly the one who gets the bad name and is tormented in school, some circumstances it is mandatory for the girl to be relocated to a different school during her pregnancy, while the boy has the option to live his life as if nothing had happened. However, girls most of the time gets the benefit of the doubt getting out trouble than boys. Boys are to be blamed first for a bad occurrence such as a food fight or graffiti on the wall. Girls who break the rules sometimes get away with it just because they are girls and they use their charm and wit as a upper hand, where boys can not “sweet talk” a teacher.

  23. Gender does not play a role in our school environment. Reason being is the fact that teacher are expected to have no bias to a particular student because of their race and gender. Also student want to be treated equally and would not take advantage of this.

    ReplyDelete
  24. There is a difference between the way girls and guys are treated in school. And this can disturb the learning environment. Especially in our class where there are 7 girls and 23 guys. In my opinion the girls have it easier than the guys. The girls can get away with things the guys just can not do. For example some girls never seem to get in trouble or get less in trouble for things that guys might do. If a girl is caught using her phone there is a lesser chance she will get it taken away than if it was a guy. The girls can act all innocent and sweet to weseal there way out of trouble because there girls and guys can't do that. Also some girls like to "kiss ass" to the teacher because they think it will get them a better grade.

  26. (Sincere apologies for being so late; I honestly convinced myself that I did this however, there is no one to blame but myself). Gender roles and behavior have little to no impact on our scholastic environment. However, it is dependent on grade level because as people age that difference grows more apparent as we humans begin to obtain a moral conscience. For example, as I recall in elementary school gender would play little to no role on work ethic or who the students socialized with. To be more specific, gender only applies to how people are treated in class. For girls the teacher and the students would possess a greater respect for them. Also, teachers would treat them differently because they may be more taciturn than guys, and would be granted special privileges. As students progress throughout the scholastic system, the divide between genders grow more transparent. In our current society, women are given the same opportunities as men. When students approach high school, we expect each gender to act a specific way. However, we socialize and communicate as equals without any recognition of differences. Although there are some differences that tend to never fade away, there are differences, such as allowing the girls "to get away with murder", that have faded away as we have aged through our seemingly equal society.
