The Origin of Othello's Insecurity (Section 07)

Hello all,

In Act 3 of Othello, we see Iago "pouring pestilence" into Othello's ear by initially hinting at the possibility that Desdemona has been carrying on an affair with Cassio, Othello's former officer. Othello's soliloquy at roughly the midpoint of Act 3, scene 3 reveals that Othello himself sees his skin color, his lack of a Venetian education and his age (he's older than Desdemona by a significant number of years) are factors that would cause Desdemona to cheat on him. It's been established through class discussion that Othello is insecure.

Your assignment is to think about the origin of Othello's insecurity. The following are suggestions that could be the origin of Othello's insecurity. Select one of the suggestions and post a comment in which you discuss why this selected suggestion could be the origin of Othello's insecurity. Please refer to one SPECIFIC example from the play to support your response. Feel free to also refer to examples outside of the text but you must refer and discuss at least one example from the play.

The suggestions are:
     A) Othello's relationship with Desdemona is his first relationship, which means his experience and interaction with women is very limited.

     B) Othello is aware that Desdemona is very beautiful and questions why she chose him when there have been previous suitors and marriage proposals from other men who are more "appropriate" and proper.
     C)  Another suggestions of your choice.

Responses are due Sunday, April 10th by 7:00 PM.

Best,

Benitez

PS: Please "sign" your name at the bottom of your responses so I can easily credit who posted and who didn't (This because some of you chose creative user names that do not directly identify who you are). Thank you.

  1. Othello is aware that Desdemona is very beautiful and questions why she chose him when there have been previous suitors and marriage proposals from other men. They are three resson why he feel like this. He is a difernt color then ever body else,he is not smart and he fell that he is not beautiful enough for her

  2. I pick choice A,Othello's relationship with Desdemona is his first relationship, which means his experience and interaction with women is very limited, because he has no experience iof relationship. When some guys girlfriend is talking to another guy, you will believe anything you hear, but if your use to it, then you look at it in another view than her cheating on you.

  3. I chose choice B because othello does have these fear of desdomona cheating on him an then he's also thinking of all these reasons why she would cheat on him, because of his skin color his age and his knowledge so I think that othello does have a right to feel this way

  4. The suggestion I pick is A. Othello's relationship with Desdemona is his first relationship, which means his experience and interaction with women is very limited. This is because he feels insucure without her. Also with Iago telling him that shes cheating on him he believes him without seeing the truth. Then he second guesses himself of why she picked him.

  5. It can be a fact that this might be Othello's first relationship, and through a lifetime where it was just him battling on his own because of the slavery he was brought through. His insecurities are brought to surface, Such as Desdemona's beauty compared to his in the color of their skin. Even the question of why she chose him when there have been previous suitors and marriage proposals from other men who are more "appropriate" especially when it came to education. However, if it were Othello's first relationship and resulting in marriage, he might not know what to expect, but based and what they went through (the secrecy of their relationship) Othello should know deep down Desdemona would not sabotage their marriage.

  6. the origin of Othello's insecurity mostly likely came from his first realationship with Desdemona which means his experience and interaction with women is very limited.Because of this Othello questions why Desdemona chose him when she had many other marriage proposals from other men.He questions all of this because of what he hears from Iago and since he knoe little of women he would believe what ever he hear. His insercrities came about where he compare Desdemona's beauty to their skin color.
